History 30 (Grade 12)

History 30, or Grade 12 History, is a study of Canadian history from Confederation to the present. In this course, the issues and events of Canadian history are presented from a Biblical perspective. This course satisfies the objectives outlined in the History 30 curriculum for Saskatchewan Learning.

The textbooks required for History 30 are Canada, A North American Nation, second edition, by Paul W. Bennett, Canada Today, third edition, by Smith, McDevitt, and Scully, and Canada, A Nation Unfolding, by Diane Eaton and Garfield Newman. None of these are Christian publications, so additional discussion has been incorporated into each of the workbooks in order to allow the students the opportunity, as necessary, to approach the events and issues under discussion from a Biblical foundation.

This workbook series was developed for use by schools using an individualized, mastery-based learning system, and therefore comes with score keys, tests, and test keys.

Upon completion of each of the units, the student should be able to:

Unit 1

  • identify the key issues concerning Canada today and throughout her history
  • understand Canadian Christian heritage
  • explain the environmental challenges facing Canada because of industrialization
  • outline the geographic conditions of each of the six physical regions of Canada along with the human and economic geography of each region
  • understand the types, the powers, and the levels of government

Unit 2

  • identify the characteristics of the Amerindian and European societies in New France
  • define mercantilism and explain its role in colonial development
  • explain the reasons for New France’s good relationship with the Amerindians
  • identify the effects that the fur trade had on the First Nations
  • discuss the outcome of the Seven Years’ War and its consequences
  • outline the provisions of the Royal Proclamation and the Quebec Act
  • discuss the forms of acculturation that took place between the societies of early Canada

Unit 3

  • identify the causes of the American Revolution
  • understand the influence that the United Empire Loyalists had on the British North American colonies
  • outline the issues addressed in the Constitutional Act
  • discuss the first settlements in the Northwest
  • outline the underlying causes of the War of 1812 and the major events of the war
  • explain the issues and events that led to rebellion
  • outline the progression of events that led to responsible government in British North America

Unit 4

  • identify the obstacles along the way to Confederation, as well as the events and issues which made it necessary
  • understand the original terms of the BNA Act
  • list the provinces that became a part of the Dominion of Canada and the dates that they joined
  • outline the causes of the Red River Rebellion and its effect upon the nation
  • explain the National Policy

Unit 5

  • outline the issues that arose with the development of the North West
  • explain how the actions and policies of other nations have influenced Canada
  • explain how Canadian foreign policy generated debate within the Canada
  • discuss the events and issues that arose during World War I
  • explain how Canada's involvement in World War I led her to greater independence and recognition as a nation

Unit 6

  • discuss the turn of the century reform movements
  • identify the issues facing the farmers in the West and the Maritime provinces
  • discuss the rise of labour militancy
  • outline the causes of the Great Depression, and explain how it caused Canadians to question the policies of previous generations
  • explain Canada's involvement in World War II

Unit 7

  • understand the purpose and the goals of the United Nations
  • outline the major issues and events of the Cold War period
  • discuss the changes in Canada’s economic condition and trade relations following World War II
  • discuss the evolving of Canada’s welfare state
  • explain economic regional disparity and how the government has tried to reduce it

Unit 8

  • outline Canada's regional issues since World War II
  • discuss the arrival of immigrants since World War II and the resulting social issues
  • understand the influence that the United States has had on Canada’s economic, social, and political policies

Unit 9

  • discuss how countries must coordinate their national economies and policies to be competitive in this world
  • understand when intervention in the internal affairs of another country is justified
  • discuss the issue of foreign ownership and investment in Canada
  • outline the process of dialectical evaluation, and apply the process to the issue of human rights and foreign policy
  • outline the construction of a concept map, and construct one
  • discuss the purpose of Canada's involvement in the Persian Gulf War, and understand the debate on Canada’s involvement
  • explain the historical issues and events concerning the French population of Canada
  • discuss the challenges that have been created by the historical disputes and divisions between the French and English speaking populations

Unit 10

  • understand the issues that arose out of the women’s rights movement
  • discuss the changes in government policy concerning the assimilation and accommodation of the Amerindians
  • explain how the native activism in the 1970’s led to the negotiations over land claims and self government
  • recall the time line of the main issues and events in Canadian history
